From a practical standpoint, the two-cent piece was one of the least successful coins in U. History – the United States Mint produced it for only ten years, and each year the mintage declined, reflecting steadily falling public interest in the coin. Despite a mintage figure comparable to those of 1866 and 1867, this date is noticeably scarcer in Mint State and genuinely rare in fully red gem condition. Given that the coining of this denomination fell so much the following year, it’s possible that not all of this date were distributed. Some may have remained in vaults when the order came in 1873 to destroy existing stocks. This example is sharply detailed with copious amounts of mint red. The PCGS population is 31 with only 21 finer (04/17). Old World Coins Award winning 1883 Registry Set. Where you can find hundreds of additional certified coins at our lowest prices!!
