Obverse of 1870 over Obverse of 1869. The Obverse die was initially hubbed with the 1869 Obverse master, then re-hubbed with the modified 1870 Hub, producing a Doubled Die. Why the Mint would feel the need to produce a new master this late in production is a mystery, as the very next year the Two Cent Piece was effectively eliminated; 1872’s are rare in any grade, the last year 1873 was Proof only. Listed as Flynn KF-2-TDO as well as FS-02-1871-103 in the Cherrypickers Guide. Doubling is most obvious on the “N” of IN and the “W” of WE as shown in the extra enlarged image provided. Please Note: this enlarged image is NOT of this coin offered here, but a prior specimen I owned – it was just available and easier to reuse an existing image. The feature is the same on the coin being offered, of course. Of interest is that Flynn notes that the 1869 Hub had an extra leaf in one of the clusters on the left side of the wreath compared to the 1870 Hub, which normally shows as a ghost image on this variety. The extra leaf does not show on this example, nor on the prior owned, which may be explained by the presence of die cracks, indicating that the die may have been refinished. Flynn does not note die cracks in his listing of this variety, so this is obviously a later die state. This coin is basically “new” and was obviously put away in the middle 1870’s originally, when it was obvious the series was obsolete. While showing virtually no wear and retaining luster, it was stored non-numismatically so has darkened up on the Reverse. Not what I would deem a problem coin, however it is possible that if submitted for certification, it could be considered “environmental damage”. Either way, a nice sharp example of this scarcer year, offered as a Net Choice EF. Good Luck & Good Hunting! Tipsico Coin, Corvallis, Oregon.
